Hi everyone! My name is Austin and I’m from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I graduated high school this past spring and after my gap year I will attend Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In high school I ski raced and played tennis, and I had a few different positons in my school’s campus ministry. Throughout high school I was always really busy with sports, schoolwork, and volunteering, so I decided to take a gap year because I felt really burnt out and I wanted a change of pace before going right into college.
I love to travel and I knew I wanted to spend my gap year seeing different parts of the world, meeting new people, and exploring my interests. After a lot of research on different gap year programs, I ultimately chose Nepal because of the combination of trekking, cultural study, and engagement with the local community. I love being in the mountains and I have been skiing and hiking my entire life, so I think I’m most excited for the trekking portion of the course. Also, I’m looking forward to immersing myself in the culture of Nepal and learning about the development of the country. For the second half of my gap year, I will be doing a public health internship in Bolivia and Mexico so I also hope to learn about the health system in Nepal so I have a better understanding of how healthcare works in different regions of the world. I hope everyone has a great last few weeks of summer and I look forward to meeting you all!
