My name is Lara Hoffer and I just graduated from high school, and am coming with you all to Madagascar as a part of my gap year before I go to Kenyon College in Ohio next year. I recently turned 18, and I’ve lived in Hanover, New Hampshire since I was maybe six, but I was born in Seattle Washington. I’m not really sure yet what I want to study in college, but I am interested in wildlife rehabilitation–I’m excited to see lemurs!–though I also love the humanities–I took a western religions class last year which was extremely interesting.
For the past eight-ish years I’ve been doing ballet–not quite rugby but I’d be willing to give that a try–and performing with my little company in the area and I love it so much. Most of my closest friendships and best times have come from my ballet studio, but am definitely ready to take a break from dancing and being in Hanover to travel and gain some other, very different experiences and perspectives this year. And I am also so excited to meet all of you, and my home stay families!
I eat a lot (which is why I chose a picture of me eating) and I am really happy that a staple in Madagascar is rice because I love rice–it’s probably one of my favorite foods. This summer I’ve been working as a hostess at a little restaurant in my town called Molly’s which has been fun most of the time and kept me busy. I really love Harry Potter, and I tend to listen to the books on tape in the car or have them playing in my room as I’m doing other things.
Though I’ve been to Europe and Canada with my family (my parents and younger brother), I haven’t done a lot of traveling by my self. So I am pretty nervous for this year, but I am also so excited and incredibly grateful to have this opportunity. Africa has always interested me, but I don’t really know what to expect because I’ve never been to a place so different from my home as Madagascar, but I really am looking foreword to learning about the ecology, the people and the country itself. I am so eager to meet you all and our instructors and guide in less than a month!
