Hi, everyone! My name is Claire McNulty. I am passionate about learning, music, words, and drinking coffee. I aim to spend as much time outside as possible, and spent this past summer working at a camp for youth from under-resourced, urban communities. I play guitar, piano, and sing (almost constantly) and I hope to be able to play music on the trip with anybody/everybody.
In a broad sense, I am most eager to learn about different people and experiences that I have not had myself. I also look forward to becoming a better teammate and human being, and being more attuned to the variety of ways through which different people best receive help, as well as how to ask for help when I feel as though I need it.
After finishing my first year of college, I realized that I was unhappy with a number of things that I associate with my experience at school. One of the major things with which I took issue was the atmosphere of elitism and privilege on-campus. I understand that taking a semester off and traveling to South America is indicative of that same strain of privilege, but I aim to get more context for the privileged life that I lead, as well as understand to a greater extent the world of which I am a part. Although this is a somewhat lofty goal, I want to educate myself so that I can hopefully be a more understanding person that can more adequately advocate for environmental, social, and political issues at home in the United States, as well as globally.
I can’t wait to meet you all in a few weeks. ¡Hasta pronto!
