Included below is an important update to packing list.
The packing list that you received in your Course Preparation Manual states that you will need to bring a self-standing mosquito net. After consideration of our current rough itinerary and the weather, we prefer that you bring an actual tent instead of the mosquito net. We will be in Madagascar during the tail end of the dry season and the beginning of the wet season. We will also be camping in several different locations and you will need to have a tent that can keep you dry. We know this is a last minute change to the packing list, so please let us know if you have any concerns.
It can be challenging to buy a good tent that can be easily carried and also reliable, so we have made a list of tents that should do the job for you. Before purchasing a tent (if you don’t already own one) you should think about what your expectations are for that tent. Tents can be very expensive and it might be worth buying a nice one if you plan on using it for a long time. However, if you are only thinking about using it on this course, you should spend less.
You should be able to get a tent that should do the job for around $100.00. Here are links to a couple of tents on Amazon that would work:
It might be worthwhile to buy a footprint or ground tarp for sleeping in the rain forest. Click here for an example.
Of course you can spend a lot more money on a tent and our recommendation would be to go to a local outdoor store or an REI and have a look at what is available. If you are interested in a tent that will last a long time and perform well we would recommend tents from MSR, Big Agnes or the REI brand.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
