Tribhuvan Airport Arrival Information

Hello, Himalayas Semester Students!

We are all so excited to see you in just a week! We know it can be intimidating to travel through a new airport, so we want to give you an overview of what is going to happen when you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on the 16th of September.

When you land you’ll walk into the immigration area of the airport. Please pick up a “Foreigner” Embarkation Card and fill it out. If you have a hard copy of a passport photo with you, proceed with your Embarkation Card to the bank counter at the far end of the hall, where you can get a hard copy of the visa application form. Fill out the form for a 90 day tourist visa, and write “Kathmandu Hotel” for the address blank. Once the form is filled out, bring it back to the bank counter and pay $100 US dollars in cash for your 90 day visa.

If you do NOT have a hard copy of your passport photo you’ll find computer kiosks on the left side of the hall. Five or six are operational. Scan your passport, confirm the information it displays, and fill out the form for a 90 day tourist visa application.  The computer will take your photo.

After you have completed these steps, the computer will print a receipt with a barcode on it. Take the printed receipt from the kiosk and walk to the bank counter near the kiosks. There, you will show the official your kiosk receipt and pay $100 for your 90 day tourist visa. PLEASE NOTE: the counter accepts Visa and Mastercard, but cash is preferred. It is best if you bring $100 cash in US dollars to cover this fee.

Please make sure everyone in your group gets through this process before anyone goes through the immigration booths.

Line up at the immigration booths on the far left, with signs above reading “90 Day tourist visa.” As you go through, hand the official your receipt from the kiosk, as well as your receipt from the bank counter, your Embarkation card, and your passport. The immigration official will place a visa in your passport and hand it back to you. Please wait for the whole group to come through, gathering out of the way of others passing through immigration. When everyone has their visas, proceed down the stairs/escalator to the baggage claim hall. You’ll have to pass through a metal detector on the way, placing your hand baggage on a belt for scanning. Once you’re in the baggage hall, find the belt with your flight information above it, and wait for everyone’s bags. Sometimes this can take a while!

After everyone has their bags, leave through the “Green” customs line, with nothing to declare. PLEASE NOTE: it is very important that you save your boarding pass with the luggage receipts on the back, because as you pass through the customs area, an official is likely to double check that the bags on your cart correspond with the claim tags on your boarding pass. You will then pass out of the arrivals hall. Dragons instructors with a sign saying “Dragons” will be waiting for you outside the arrivals hall, so excited to see your faces in Nepal!
