My host brother Omesh loves cricket. He runs around our small house, hitting a rubber ball with his plastic bat while shouting the names of his favorite players. When a match is on tv he jumps on our grandmother, mataji’s, bed and yells “please come! India must win!” Until we have all gathered around the small screen. His friends swarm the alley behind the house, peeking through the iron gated window in the back of the room for a glance at the score. They set up plastic chairs under the window in order to get the best view of the tv. The little boys jump around shrieking to celebrate India’s triumph over the New Zealand cricket team.
It’s a great day for a ball game, Rachel Nahirny
