From El Alto to Potosí: The journey continues

After a week in El Alto, the migrant city that has just short of 1 million people and that perches atop La Paz and watches over the valley with peering eyes, our group is headed to the even higher city of Potosí. This city, arguably the birthplace of capitalism, will be a continued learning experience for the group.

Our Focus of Inquiry, or FOI, is Cooperación y Conflicto: Self, Community, and Space. Through this focus, our objectives are to find the elements of cooperation and conflict in the different spaces that we get to know, albeit briefly, through our journey through Bolivia and Peru. Our time in El Alto was mostly dedicated to interacting with homestay families and the theater company that hosted us.

We visited schools with individuals from the theater troupe, participated in workshops with theater members that looked into themes like decolonization of the body, and we watched a play about the mining history of Bolivia.

We also made a trip to the American Embassy, students participated in a scavenger hunt in La Paz, and got to know their families a bit better during their Domingo Familiar or Sunday Family Day.

Keep posted for updates from students about their experiences from El Alto and we look forward to being in contact with you all on the yak board in Potosí and later Uyuni!

Saludos y abrazos!
