Group Haikus from the Hike

The group’s four day trek through the hills near Ranikhet was full of exciting moments. Long stretches of strolling up and down forested mountainsides were punctuated by visits to a school, two temples, and a seed bank. To reflect on this experience, we have composed haikus that walk you through a day on the trek. Enjoy!

sun rises; me too
sky for it, chai for me, and
travel for us both

walking in the clouds
tops of mountains peaking out
himalayan view

we get to the top
take off our shoes to enter
hanuman’s temple

cross-legg’d perch, clear mind
hills roll, pines sway, monals trill
sun sets, darkness, hush

poles strewn, stakes on scat
praying our teetering tent
somehow stays intact

no comfort when i
lie down, look up at the stars
new constellations
