After anticipating the start of our “Maha Trek” for weeks, we finally found ourselves on the long and gut wrenching bus ride to our first campsite. As we started up the hill the following day we were followed by the sounds of bells and singing from a funeral procession in the valley below.
All of our hopes of seeing stunning Himalayan views were soon satisfied as we arrived at our next campsite with a breathtaking view of Langtang Ri. Despite several sick students, the mood of our group has continued to rise with every meter we hike through fields covered with edelweiss and forests ringing with cicadas.
We have now finished the first leg of our trek through the Tamang Heritage region and are heading up to the sacred lake Gosai Kunda, which for most of us will be the highest we have ever been. So far the much anticipated Maha Trek has not failed to disappoint, and I can’t wait for more hot and hard days of hiking to come.
