Hello dear friends and families,
For the last two days, we have been preparing for yet another great learning opportunity. After finishing our trek on the sacred Apu Ausangate mountain, we have been getting ready to start our visit to BOCA, a rural community in the Amazon rainforest. There we will be learning through Fauna Forever, a conservationist nonprofit working in the area, about their attempts to protect the rainforest.
It is always very exciting to be amazed by the beauty on the change in landscape coming from the high Andes to the low lands. The vegetation starts changing so dramatically in just a few hours of a car ride. We can see how rocky mountains start turning into grasslands and suddenly into cloud forest. The sounds of the birds and animals start turning the surroundings into a more evident party of life.
We got to experience this process yesterday coming from Ocongate to Puerto Maldonado, where we are finishing some preparation for this expedition. In the afternoon, we will be heading to BOCA and stay there for the next five days. There we will be learning about the wildlife in the region, ways that the communities live, about medicinal plants and crafts in the region.
During this time, we will once again be out of touch and won’t have internet or cell phone service. We will be sharing some of our learnings with you once we are back in Puerto Maldonado on October 7th.
