We are currently on our way to Machu Picchu, winding through the stunning sacred valley in a bus. Later today we are going to hike to our campsite for the night and head to Machu Picchu early in the morning! We are so excited! Yesterday a group of us went on a spontaneous hike to the sacred but quite touristy Rainbow Mountain. We woke up at four in the morning and slept through the three hour drive, reaching the trail at daybreak. The elevation of Rainbow Mountain was 5200 meters, meaning we had to stop a bunch to catch our breath. Once we made it to the top we were not disappointed, it was an amazing geologic sight. The mountain is layered with colorful sediment that eroded and was exposed to air due to years of melting glaciers. We ate our lunch at the top with cute drooling puppies that we gave our scraps to. We then descended quickly to the bottom just missing an approaching thunderstorm. As we were driving we pulled over to watch a community horse race in a field on the side of the road! We made it back to our hostel in Cusco in time to relax before dinner. Here are some pictures from our hike.
Have a great weekend!
