Hi from Seattle! My name is Madison Beveridge and I am 18. I graduated in June 2017 and have been working at a restaurant, traveling locally and preparing for our trip for the past couple months! I love photography, meeting new people and exploring so I am so excited to meet you all and start our adventure!
I found that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Ted Talk shed light on a lot of the preconceived notions that myself and many people initially have when thinking about a new environment. When considering the India semester, I used what I had heard from friends, what I had seen on social media and watched in movies to form an opinion about India. Basing my thoughts and expectations solely off of stereotypes I had was something I was quick to do, yet I now realize how detrimental that can be. After hearing the Ted Talk, I am more conscious about this and am excited to explore the many backstories and break down the stereotypes of people we meet and places we explore. Although I still have some expectations and ideas of what India may be like, I hope to use Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Ted Talk to aid a sense of open-mindedness when embarking on this new adventure. I feel that the best way to truly break away these single stories is experiencing this new environment first hand and I look forward to doing so.
I can’t wait to meet you all soon!
