Hello!!! My name is Elliot Adams and I am 17 years old. A few activities I enjoy doing is playing sports, watching movies, and both listening to and making music with my friends. I consider myself a relatively experienced traveler as I have visited China, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Mexico along with many different states all across the country. I live in Monte Clair, New Jersey; however, up until 2 weeks ago I was a highschool student living with my grandma in Grand Rapids, Michigan where I grew up. This past summer my family moved to New Jersey and I was given the option to either join them or stay back with my grandma, graduate a semester early, and do something over seas with my extra time. I’ll let you piece together which option I decided to go with.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s idea that viewing an entire culture in the confines of a single story is dangerougs is important for us to hold on to as we depart for India. I assume that most of us were raised in a privaleged western culture that portrays countries such as Nigeria and India, along with many others, as poverty stricken countries who are constantly at domestic odds. What Chimamanda addresses in her Ted Talk is that although these depictions may have truth it is just a small fraction of what these places truely behold. What all of us, the people departing for India next week, have in common is that like Chimamanda we are not satisfied with only being exposed to the unfortunate side to what it is in actuality one of the most beautiful and diverse countries on the planet. This is why we turn to programs like Where There Be Dragons to emerse us into their culture in order for us to get a full understanding of what it is like to live in a place like India.
Needless to say, I am extremely excited to meet you all next week and am psyched that we will be spending the next three months of our lives on an unforgettable journey together.
