Om Shanti Shanti Shanti,
Om Peace Peace Peace!
While nestled in the ancient artisan city of Patan, I have been fortunate to immerse myself in an aspect of the culture so deeply rooted in Nepal’s lifestyle and history. For the past two weeks my afternoons have been spent dedicated to my independent study project, Ayurveda. It is a subject so close to my heart having lived in a yoga ashram where Ayurveda is practiced and to study it in the part of the world in which it originated from is simply incredible! To be able to study underneath one of the greatest practitioners in the region is such a blessing too.
Ayurveda is the science of life. You may be thinking, “Oh, so is biology,” which is very true! However, Ayurveda is the science of your whole life’s wellbeing from when you were in your mother’s womb to when you pass on. Its purpose is to heal not just your physical body but your mind, soul and your senses. Ayurveda nurtures all people and brings happiness, harmony, peace and health to one’s life, how beautiful!
My guru, Dr. Sarita, speaks wisdom passed down from generations by the greatest swamis of the Himalaya. Her passion is contagious and her story is inspiring. She is the first woman to become an Ayurvedic practitioner in Nepal and her expertise from practicing for over 25 years has changed the lives of hundreds of patients and students. I am fortunate to be one of them!
It is so surreal to make sense of such an incredible spiritual science. Through herbal remedies, right eating, understanding the depths of an individual’s physical, mental and emotional state, meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), yoga and living a life according to Vedic knowledge can one attain a truly peaceful life. The ultimate goal of Ayurveda is Self-Realization, knowing that the purest of wisdom, the deepest of love and the greatest of bliss is within one’s own mind and heart. This is the highest form of Self-Healing. This is Ayurveda.
My spirit is so joyful my friends, my heart is so full of gratitude and my mind is completely open, always listening to everything this country has to teach me!
I can’t wait to share it all with you in time!
