Today we traveled to a small village outside of Kunming that was located on a mountain. It had a population of about 1,000 people, many of which were either very young or very old. We met our host Ting Ting, who is working on a sustainable living project, which encourages people to move from cities back to villages and embrace the simpler village lifestyle to help the environment. Our first thing that we did in the village was break into groups; the first went to forage for vegetables which we would cook later for dinner, while the other pulled weeds and reused them for fertilizer for apple trees. I went into the group that pulled weeds and our leader’s name happened to be Yang Yang. After the morning activities we headed back to Ting Ting’s house to have lunch. We had met some local children along the way who loved playing with the boys. They were very curious about all of us, but they weren’t the only ones in the town. We arrived a wedding ceremony after lunch, but the bride and groom hadn’t arrived yet, because it is a tradition that the groom picks up the bride from her village and bring her to the wedding. Well, when we arrived, the guests were probably just as or even more excited see us as they would be to see the bride and groom. They were inviting us to dance, taking so many photos with us, giving us bags of sunflower seeds and candy, it was awesome! We all had a great time. We went back to Ting Ting’s house and prepared our vegetables that we picked for dinner. They were so fresh and delicious. After we ate, we headed back to Kunming and a small group of us went back to the night market before heading back to the hotel. Tomorrow is our last full day in Kunming!
