During transference we were asked to write what we had learned from our three months in Indonesia. Rather than focusing on the more academic lessons we learned, this exercise drew attention towards our emotional changes. So in closure we would like to share them with you.
I don’t love negativity, and so when something I don’t like or didn’t expect happens it can be a bigger obstacle than it needs to be.
I learned that I shouldn’t sacrifice my happiness/emotions all the time to benefit others if it brings me down or puts me in a very bad personal place.
I am a person who has a lot of fleeting dreams/goals that I need to put action to rather than just keep them as thoughts in my mind.
I learned that explaining who I am doesn’t explain anything. I’ve learned that there’s value in doing things even if they fail. And that life is long and I’ve got plenty of time, so take time to let moments live themselves out. Because it’s in the lapse in conversation where the truth lies.
I learned to accept my sadness for what it is, meditating on it as an emotion, and being able to recover from these moments.
I learned how to sit in boredom and uncomfortable situations with seemingly no escape.
My capacity for self reflection has expanded and I have learned to look for beauty and inspiration everywhere I go even where it isn’t immediately apparent.
I learned how to sit with difficult thoughts and let my mind process slowly and to not need immediate resolution.
I have complete capacity to react to situations, as well as to choose how I want to relate to people and nature. I have discovered the beauty of recognizing the beauty and importance of every individual existence. I also allowed myself to accept my emotions, and let them be. Learning to balance happiness and sadness.
