My name is Christina Montiel and I am a 5th grade Dual Immersion Teacher in Jackson, Wyoming. As a Dual Immersion Teacher I teach all content area in Spanish, including Science. In both my personal and professional life I have continuously sought to seek and teach a wider global perspective instead of being satisfied with just understand what is close to home. I attempt to engage students in exploring science standards not just from a local perspective but also as they pertain to the parts of the world that are unknown to them. Including when investigating the 5th grade NGSS standard around what different communities do to reduce their footprint and conserve their natural resources. I am hopeful that participating in this course will allow me to take the students even deeper.
In the reading, the quote that resonated with me was, “that is why many of us travel not in search of answers, but of better questions.” In the past 13 years I have traveled to Mexico, Canada, India, Peru, Chile, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Spain… passing through Hong Kong, Singapore, and Nicaragua. As a passionate life learner of Spanish, one of my life goals is to visit every Spanish speaking country in the world…..with the purpose of learning things that I didn’t know I didn’t know, indulging my curiosities and learning a new way to see the world.
