Introduction from Luis

Hello Students and Families of HIES!

My name is Luis Alvarado and I’ll be one of your instructors on your course this Summer to Nicaragua. I was happy to see and hear from some of you during the video conference call the other night and for those who weren’t there I’m really looking forward to meeting you soon.

I’ve been working for Dragons for the past 8 years in a range of roles. I’ve instructed every kind of course we offer as well as working as Program Director and Curriculum Designer in our administration. I have to say though, that of all the different positions available at the organization, instructing is my favorite. There’s nothing like being on the ground with students as we move through the fun, challenging and ultimately perspective shifting experience of deep engagement with a new place.

The majority of my experience instructing has been in Central America. After graduating from University I lived for several years on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala and was originally hired to work there. However our programing quickly expanded to Nicaragua and so I’ve spent much of the past few years there as well. I’ve learned so much from the people and history of Nicaragua, and there’s still so much to learn!

After years of instructing in Nicaragua, being there now means going to visit old friends and being with people who have become like family to me. I continue to grow and learn alongside these people and I’m really excited that you’ll have that opportunity as well! As we move closer to the departure date please don’t hesitate to be in touch via the Yak board if you have any questions or concerns that I can help address.

Thanks for your spirit of adventure and openness that makes all this possible.

Nos vemos pronto,
