Why We Travel

“Not the least of the challenges of travel, therefore, is learning how to import — and export– dreams with tenderness.” Pico Iyer addresses an important point by bringing up this idea of an exchange of ideas between people. Many times travelers are the ones to convey news and information to the people they meat, especially in impoverished places. This means that travelers have to be thoughtful with how they share information. Iyer later goes on to talk about the complex issue relating to the American Dream that many people believe to be always true. He asks if travelers should either enable these visions even if it gives others false hope or should they speak their mind even if it means ruining another person’s dreams. When traveling, I think it is important to be conscientious of our impact on others in addition to being aware of ourselves in general when we travel abroad.
