Introduction – Jack Holmgren

Hello all!

My name is Jack Holmgren and I live about an hour outside Boston in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. I’ve had a lot to be excited about recently. My brother and sister graduated from high school (the photo above is from their graduation), I turned 16 not too long ago on June 10, I just finished all of my final exams a couple of days ago, and I recently got my driver’s permit! But, I’ve been looking forward to our trip together to Bhutan above all else. Having just finished World History in my Sophomore year, I was severely disappointed when the course only covered European history (post the first French Revolution). So I have been eager to learn more about other cultures around the world and explore the differences between Western values and the rest of the world. Most of all I am excited to compare Buddhism to Christianity. Having never been religious myself, I find the impact religions have on society incredibly intriguing.

Just a bit more about myself: I participate in Mock Trial, Debate, Future Business Leaders of America, Global Economic Symposium, and Philosophy Club at my high school. In addition, a close friend of mine and I founded our school’s Model United Nations Club this past year. I also play Football in the fall. With all of this, I often have little time to reflect on what I have learned and my growth as a person, so I feel this trip to Bhutan with all of you with offer a chance for me to do just that. I can’t wait to meet all of you soon!
