Malaria Medication

We were given Malarone  (Atovaquone/Proguanil 250 mg-100mg) tablets for Malaria prevention. Directions are: Take 1 tablet daily, starting 1 day before entering Malaria risk area and continue taking for 7 days after leaving Malaria risk area. We were given 18 pills. Is that enough pills to cover travel in and out of these areas?

Answer: The group will spend 12 days in the Amazon, from July 27th through August 7th.  The last few days, from August 4th to 7th, will be spent in the town of Puerto Maldonado, where there is a very low risk of Malaria.  Therefore, 18 pills of Malarone would probably be sufficient.  Students wanting to take Malarone up until course-end on August 7th would need 21 Malarone tablets.
