“We travel, initially, to lose ourselves; and we travel, next, to find ourselves.”
This is the opening line of a beautiful essay by writer Pico Iyer, which we would love you all to read in preparation for our upcoming trip – the link is here: Why We Travel. On your voyage to Cambodia, we would like you to take some time to think and write about the following two items:
- All of us have chosen to travel this summer. And not in the usual “armchair” way of hotels, swimming pools, and western breakfasts, but we have all chosen to step off the map and have a rugged and immersive experience, traveling close to the ground to truly learn how other people live and see the world. “Though it’s fashionable nowadays to draw a distinction between the “tourist” and the “traveler,” perhaps the real distinction lies between those who leave their assumptions at home, and those who don’t.” After reading the Why We Travel article, reflect for a while on this question of why you travel. Why did you make the decision to come to Cambodia this summer? What is it that your soul is yearning for with this journey? What steps can you take yourself to ensure that you achieve your goals and get everything you want out of this experience? Please come prepared with something to share on this prompt. Maybe you want to choose a passage from the article that particularly resonated with you and discuss why it did. Maybe you would like to write a story or a poem. Or maybe you just want to freestyle on the prompt and see what comes out.
- Please write a letter to your I-Team (Instructor Team) regarding “Some Things You Should Know About Me.” We can’t wait to share more about us when we all meet in just a couple more days!
We hope you enjoy reflecting on these important questions. We thank you for your courage and your curiosity, for committing yourself and your energy to this experience and our community.
