Today is the first morning of our urban homestays in Kalimpong. Last night we hosted a welcome party for the homestay families at the program house in Kalimpong and shared cups of chai and biscuits. Afterwards students departed with their families to get settled into their new homes for the next week.
After a few days of traveling from Kolkata to Kalimpong we are looking forward to spending time in one place and establishing new routines and rituals as a group. The next week will include daily Nepali lessons, meetings with guest lecturers and community members, ISps, time with homestay families, and excursions as a group in and around Kalimpong.
Here is a photo of day 1 of Nepali lessons as well as the view from the front porch of the Dragons program house. This house has quite a bit of history and at one point was actually the home of the last Burmese princess! Its quite a magical place to be based for our time here.
Today the monsoon has us socked in but we get intermittent views of the surrounding hills and communities. Fingers crossed the clouds will clear enough at some point to see the Himalayan range that we know looms in the distance!
