Hello! My name is Joe Becker. I’m originally from upstate New York, but I’ve spent the last two years living in Costa Rica, as a student of United World College Costa Rica (UWCCR). While studying at UWCCR, I became fascinated with the study of economic development, specifically the role of international organizations and corporations in stimulating economic growth, and the power structures which arise as a result of their activities. Further exploration of these issues is one of the myriad reasons why Bridge Year appealed to me in the first place, and I hope to learn more during the next nine months.
Outside of school, I’m a “Game of Thrones” fanatic as any of my friends can attest. I’m also an avid reader: Salman Rushdie’s “Midnight’s Children” and “The Ground Beneath Her Feet” ignited my interest in India several years ago, and inspired me to apply for this specific placement. Additionally, I’m a massive music fan, and at school could often be found in my friends’ rooms delivering monologues about the glories of “Like a Rolling Stone,” my favorite song. Bridge Year is truly a unique opportunity, and I cannot wait to begin the experience.
