Trek View on Nepal: Himalayan Studies Gap Year Semester with Where There Be Dragons

Hi everyone! My name is Makenzie and I am so excited to be starting this journey with you all. I am 18 years old, and live in Menlo Park, California (about 30 minutes outside of San Francisco). I am taking a gap year before attending the University of Michigan in the fall of 2019 because I believe that there is so much more to life than the traditional path of high school, college, job, etc. One of my worst fears is looking back on my life and realizing that I didn’t take enough time to adventure and just live, so I am hitting pause on my education to do just that 🙂

I work at a cafe near my house, and I am saving everything to fund the rest of my gap year. After Nepal I plan on traveling through France (and as many other countries as I can get to!) because I’ve been taking French since 8th grade and it is a longtime goal of mine to be fluent. I love (love love LOVE) the idea of being trilingual, so hopefully I squeeze in some Spanish along the way as well. Language is a huge passion of mine, as well as backpacking/white water rafting/canoeing/anything outdoorsy, water polo, spending time with friends, blasting music in the car, and writing slam poetry. I am also really interested in neuroscience, which is what I plan on majoring in in college.

Aside from the intensive homestay, trekking, and religion components of the program, something about Nepal has always drawn me in. As a huge backpacker, I am incredibly excited to trek in mountains as big and beautiful as the Himalaya. I currently have a sticky note with “Namaste – I bow to the divine in you” above my bed because I love the definition so much 🙂 I cannot wait to meet you all in a few weeks and begin our adventure!

See you soon!
