We’ve noticed that a lot of folks are passionate about music, which is awesome since Indonesia has vibrant music cultures. If you want to learn a little beforehand, check out some of the links below:
Aural Archipelago — This site is loaded with recordings/videos and descriptions of Indonesia’s diverse musical traditions, all compiled by an American ethnomusicologist based in Yogyakarta. The videos can also be found on the companion youtube channel of the same name.
American Gamelan Institute Library — This is a great place to start reading about gamelan. There are tons of videos and recordings of excellent gamelan all over the internet, and youtube is a great place to soak it up.
Jogja Hip Hop Foundation — If you’re interested in hip hop, Jogja Hip Hop Foundation (JHF) is a great place to start learning about Indonesian hip hop. JHF is a collective of hip hop musicians based in Central Java, and you can read about them at the provided link. A websearch for “Jogja Hip Hop Foundation” will turn up plenty of videos and websites where you can read more.
Info on instruments and mp3 players is covered in our previous answer (posted 8/24) to Ariella’s question, and our recent post on our electronics policy.
Looking forward to chatting more in person in a few weeks!
