Hi! I’m Bennett, and I’m an 18-year-old from Virginia in the U.S. (that’s a selfie I just took). I just graduated high school and did not want to go to college yet, which, in addition to having a passion for martial arts and a desire for unique and useful life experiences before college, led me to this program. After Dragons, my gap year is going to consist of a six-month stay in a residential martial arts school in Yunnan, so I’ll be coming right back to China after visiting home for the holidays. After that, I will attend the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I got my enrollment deferred for a year.
In school I took six years of Spanish — my Chinese isn’t too impressive, so hopefully some of you guys will be able to help me out with that. What led me to focus on Asia for my gap year was a lifelong fascination with martial arts and Eastern wisdom in general.
I enjoy diving (the board kind), weightlifting, running, working with kids, physics, and I’m a 2nd degree in Jhoon Rhee Tae Kwon Do. I used to have a man bun and I’m totally into nature and hippie stuff. I have two cats that attack each other and a younger sister who has 100 times the Instagram followers I have.
I’m super nervous for this trip because I’ve never been to Asia and don’t know the language and I don’t know what to expect at all but this is still what I want to do so hopefully I’m ready for it when the time comes! See you soon!
