Hi everyone!! My name is Zora! I am named after an African-American rights activist/author, Zora Neale Hurston (she wrote Their Eyes Were Watching God). I love my name, but I am thinking about going by Sara while we are in South America because my given name is uncomfortably close to a Spanish curse word lol.

I love experiencing all forms of art, especially literature and music. Some of my favorite books include The Unbearable Lightness of Being, American Pastoral, and Madame Bovary, and right now I am really enjoying A Hundred Years of Solitude.  In terms of music, I listen to everything from Elliott Smith and Thelonious Monk to The Beach Boys and A Tribe Called Quest, and am always looking for new recommendations. I also like playing board games, writing, going for long walks/hikes, and baking pies, but my absolute favorite activity is talking to people who think deeply about life and the world around them. I am super excited to do a lot of that with all of you this semester!

I am really nervous, but also thrilled, to apply what I know of Spanish and backpacking to a new cultural/physical landscape that will force me to learn and grow in all kinds of challenging and rewarding ways. I actually got brain surgery earlier this year, so taking this time off from college will be, for me, partially about feeling grounded again after an emotionally and physically challenging time in my life, and partially a reminder to keep pushing myself to be strong and curious about the world no matter what.

I can’t wait to get to know all of you, and look forward to seeing you in person in Miami (so crazy soon)! 😀
