A little fish in a massive ocean. That’s what it felt like at first. Trying to come up for air between uncomfortable silences, constant introductions, and the back and forth of Wolof.
But now the waves have settled and the fish is able to navigate the obstacles of the ocean. The bucket for a shower feels easier to carry, the combination of roasted peanuts with bittersweet attaya is now a nighttime ritual, and the walk to school is filled with familiar faces crying out “Salaam Alekum!”
Even the silences have grown familiar. The simple act of enjoying the company of others allows the fish to take a second and be grateful for the journey through the ocean thus far.
