We have been in Morocco for fifteen days and still the matter of time is creating awkward moments. Morocco switched over to “new time” years ago. To clarify new time; it’s an extra hour, which the Moroccan government added to GMT time for economical reasons and to be in sync with some European countries. Ordinary people still use “old time”for their appointments, however, while official and administrative work operates on ‘new time”. We work with both, and we always have to remind one another about whether we are referring to new time or old time. This creates some funny moments, when you hear, “Oh, we people sleep a lot in this city, and new time is a punishment for us!” This is the situation with new vs. old time in Morocco.
