The Market

Hi everyone!

We are finally here in San Juan and everyone has settled into their homestays!

The first full day here, my host mom brought me to the market in the center of town. Sunday is defiinitely a market day because it was very crowded and hard to squeeze through the crowd. My host mom and I started by walking to the area where you can purchase meat. We were buying chicken and as we were walking by the different vendors I quickly realized that they were butchering the chicken right in front of us. Until Sunday I had never seen that before. I had never seen the head cut off a chicken and that was an experience to say the least!

Once we got home from the market my host mom asked me “¿Quieres ayudarme cocina el almuerzo?” (Do you want to help me cook lunch?) Of course I jumped at the opportunity. We made a traditional Guatemalan lunch which consisted of chicken, many vegetables, and of course you can never forget the tortillas!! Even though communicating is not the easiest thing to do, my host mom and I found a way to make it work and made a delicious meal together!
