Hi I’m Hope!

Hi everyone, my name is Hope Murphy!

I was born in Richmond, Virginia but I’ve grown up on my family’s farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I spend my summers paddle boarding, traveling, babysitting, playing tennis, visiting my friends, and being outside as much as possible. I’m taking a gap year before going to Loyola University Maryland next fall. I’m really passionate about psychology and mental health. This fall I spent 50 days in the Blue Ridge mountains in North Carolina on an Outward Bound Outdoor Educator program. It was an intense experience of hiking, white water canoeing, and rock climbing. Since then I’ve participated in a peacebuilding and conflict resolution program in DC at American University. It was with an organization called Tuesday’s Children which brings together kids from around the world who have been affected by terrorism. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done. This WTBD Nepal trip is what I have been waiting for all year and I’m so glad it’s the last part of my gap year. As someone else wrote on here, I really feel like this is going to be the culmination of everything I’ve learned this year and I cannot wait.

Though I was born into a family of serious travelers, I’ve never had an opportunity to really immerse myself in a culture and see it as a local and not a tourist. I’m so excited for this chance to see a new culture and country in a new perspective, trek in the Himalayas, and spend three months with a group of people I don’t know yet.

I’m most looking forward to the retreat at a Tibetan monastery because I’m fascinated by Buddhism and meditation. I’m also excited to stay with a host family and be exposed to a way of life that is different than mine. Finally, I’m excited to spend three months with you guys and get to know you all and your stories 🙂 As nervous as I am to initially take the leap, I’m more than excited to immerse myself in a new culture and be surrounded by a great group of people that I know will become family by the end.

Can’t wait to meet you all in just 18 days!
