Student Introduction

Hello, my name is Tomas Cortes. I am a sports loving thinker who enjoys to contemplate upon everything, from a miniscule and irrelevant detail to life’s deeper questions not even google can answer. I enjoy good company and constantly learning, but above all to laugh and savor life.

I am most eager to understand the interplay of globalization and economic growth with environmental and cultural sustainability along the Mekong river. This is a region of the world I am not too familiar with and can’t wait to being our immersion in it.

I believe that the development of one’s personality begins at birth and should only end at death. Thereby these 83 days of new and unique experiences will stimulate this development in a way I have never experienced before.

A poem called the Village Preacher by Oliver Goldsmith has one of the goals I want to reach in life. The passage below is my favorite part.

“To them his heart, his love, his griefs were given,

But all his serious thoughts had rest in heaven.

As some tall cliff that lifts its awful form,

Swells from the vale, and midway leaves the storm,

Though round its breast the rolling clouds are spread,

Eternal sunshine settles on its head”.
