Right now, we have broken into 4 different groups as we race to finish a scavenger hunt that takes us all around Phnom Penh. While the task initially seemed daunting, exploring the city has been an amazing opportunity. Without any phones, we realized that we needed to communicate with local people to get around. In the course of a single day, we visited two pagodas, talked with a monk, took tuk tuks across the city, rode a local bus, sneaked into Olympic Stadium, and got lost several times. Walking around the city in a small group without phones allows you to see so much more. We can’t google where places are located, look up Khmer translations, or rely on the comfort of immediate contact with our instructors.
