“In closed or impoverished places, like Pagan or Lhasa or Havana, we are the eyes and ears of the people we meet, their only contact with the world outside and, very often, the closest, quite literally, they will ever come to Michael Jackson or Bill Clinton.” (Pg.6) (By Pico Lyer) This resonates with me because when we visit Guatemala we might be the first Californians the locals ever met. So we have to make a good impression so they see Americans as kind and caring people who aren’t not ignorant but instead respect the locals culture. Also, the quote said it best, we might be the most popular Americans they have ever met so we have to leave a good mark on the community.
