Dear friends and family of the Mekong semester,
The group flight has landed in Phnom Penh! One student is still en route on a separate flight, but we wanted to update you all to let you know that the group is nearly all here in Cambodia, as you can see from our photo.
From Phnom Penh, we travel today to the community of Chombok, where we will spend 4 days in a calm, rural setting getting acquainted with Southeast Asia and with each other. The group will begin language lessons and begin learning about our major course themes: dams on the Mekong, local spiritual practice (especially Buddhism), history and politics in the region, and the daily pace of life.
After our time in Chombok, we return to Phnom Penh for a few days. In the city, we will visit historical sites associated with the Cambodian genocide and hear from NGO workers striving for environmental protection along the Mekong.
Finishing our time in Phnom Penh, we travel by boat and tuktuk to our first homestay in Koh K’sach Tonlea, a village on an island in the Basaac River.
Stay tuned for more updates!
