Hello Haverford Students and Families,
My name is Luis Alvarado and I’m going to be your instructor on your upcoming course in Guatemala. I’m writing to you from the shores of Lake Atitlan where we’ll be spending the majority of our time together. I’ve spent many years of my life here learning from the people of this land and I’m happy to have the opportunity to be with you as we learn here together.
Guatemala is a land of ancient tradition, modern problems, historical conflict, and profound beauty. Together we’ll explore all of these realms of Guatemala and her reality. We’ll learn about land, the root of Guatemala’s culture and conflict. We’ll also learn about the spiritual traditions related to land and time that have been present here for thousands of years. Together we’ll explore the foundations of the long-lasting effects of the Spanish conquest and US intervention in Guatemala which continue to have strong impacts on people’s lives.
There is so much to learn, do and see here! You’ve made a great choice deciding to come to Guatemala. Please don’t hesitate to be in touch with questions before your departure. I can be reached at [email protected]
See you soon,
