Hi, my name is Maddy! I am 17 years old and a senior at MDIHS. I love being outside, whether that be hiking, swimming, or walking my dog. I also love playing basketball as well as hanging out with my family and friends. I will be attending the University of Oregon, in Eugene, this fall majoring in Psychology. I’m really excited to step out of my comfort zone and be fully immersed in a culture that is different from my own and am thankful for the opportunity.
We recently read an article called “Why We Travel” by Pico Iyer and were asked to pick a quote that resonated with us. The quote that I chose says, “That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.” To me, this quote describes exactly what traveling is about. While we first travel to find answers, to separate ourselves from ignorance, we often end up with more questions than we started with. Traveling allows constant deaths and rebirths of our thoughts through conversations. We are constantly learning, destroying the pre-conceived ideas that we had and forming new opinions. The amazing thing about traveling and having new experiences is that they are never-ending. Even when we think we know everything, there is always more to learn about people, places, culture and ourselves. I hope to bring a mindset of being open to new experiences and a passion for learning with me when we travel to Guatemala.
Can’t wait 🙂
