Hola! My name is Maggie Collins, I’m 18 years old and am a senior at MDIHS. I enjoy hiking, dancing and singing, swimming in the cold lakes, walking along our rocky beaches, and hanging out with my friends. I moved to the island from Atlanta, Georgia when I was 10 years old and the drastic changes between a big city and a small island were challenging but sparked my interest in traveling and exploring the cultural differences between near and far communities. I am fortunate enough to have been able to travel with my family over the years and actually have traveled to Coban, Guatemala to visit my Grandfather who started a non-profit called “From Houses to Homes”; building homes, schools and hospitals for rural communities. I am more than excited to travel back to Guatemala and take advantage of all the opportunities we will have as a group in order to see Guatemala from a new perspective.
When reading “Why We Travel”, I found a quote that represented why I am excited about traveling. It states that, “We live without a past or a future, for a moment at least, and are ourselves up for grabs and open to interpretation.” I am choosing to go to Guatemala even though I am nervous and know it will be a challenge to live in uncertainty. I know that at this time in my life it is crucial to escape our island and be able to live in the moment in order to open myself up and once again spark a passion for learning before the next chapter of my life begins. I hope to bring an open mindset and support to the entire group while traveling in order to soak up all Guatemala has to offer! See you soon!
