Hi, I’m Birney and I’m in the ninth grade at Lawrenceville! On campus, I play squash, but my main extracurricular is writing for a SNLville, a student publication. I’m a member of both the Sports and Business Club and Religious Life Council, and after reading the Clash of Monotheisms piece, I hope to apply some takeaways to the latter!
I’ve traveled out of the country before, but never to Africa, so I’m so excited to become more familiar with a part of it and gain a better understanding of the culture! While we are traveling, I would like to try to keep in mind Santayana’s quote from the article that reads “There is wisdom in turning as often as possible from the familiar to the unfamiliar; it keeps the mind nimble; it kills prejudice, and it fosters humor.” so that I can remember to keep my mind open to new things in order become a more cultured and worldly person, or simply, to be a traveler rather than a tourist.
