Hi, my name is Sydney! I’m a tenth grader from Ohio. At Lawrenceville, I love to play field and ice hockey, as well as singing in choir. I also participate in a couple clubs. Throughout my life, I’ve been exposed to a lot of different places. Some of my favorites include France, Japan, Canada, and Italy. I’m so excited to embark on this journey to meet new people as well as experience a culture I have never been exposed to. French has been a passion for me in school over the past 4 years, and I really look forward to applying that during the trip.
In the article we read, “Why we travel”, I found a quote I enjoyed: “This is what Camus meant when he said that “what gives value to travel is fear” — disruption, in other words, (or emancipation) from circumstance, and all the habits behind which we hide. And that is why many of us travel not in search of answers, but of better questions.”
For me, this quote summed up a lot of why I decided to apply for this trip. I often find myself very comfortable in the American, Mid-Western lifestyle I’ve lived my entire life. When I reflect on past trips, I see myself taking a tourism route with other foreigners. I really want to step out of my comfort zone and experience something that pushes me to break habits and immerse myself in the new part of me I may find during this trip. I’m so excited to get to know/meet everyone better, and I can’t wait for this adventure!
