6/22/19 Activities

Hello parents and friends!

Today we were given a tour around the Dolma Ling Nunnery. We were able to see into the lives of Buddhists nuns and learn about how they are progressing their educational opportunities and their incredible sustainability efforts. For example, these women recently have been able to receive a PHD and have more career choices, compared to their past which limited them to being servants and house keepers. Although the world is progressing, and cultures are victim to modernization, the women of the Dolma Ling Nunnery are able to preserve their culture while also keeping up with the rest of the world. There are Buddhists nuns that range from 11 to 80 years old who all live in harmony together, studying Buddhist philosophy and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle. It was a very humbling experience.

Another humbling experience was our “happiness” activity. We were given the task to use 500 rupees to spread as much happiness around the neighborhood as we could. We split off into pairs, and used different ideas to put a smile on new faces. Some groups bought ice cream since today was a hot day, and gave it away to children and people working on their street stands in the sun. People also bought toys to give to children, and one pair wrote ‘thank you’ notes to the people working on the streets and reminded them that their work did not go unnoticed. After an hour, we re-united and shared our experiences with each other. We discussed how this experience felt, and how it was difficult to make someone truly happy in one hour without any prior knowledge of who they are. I noticed that after we did this activity, we all wanted to do more for other people and were inspired to do something meaningful with our spare time in Dharamshala. It was definitely a fun experience to make people happy, and practice selflessness and awareness for other people.

Till next time,

Vicky and Joi
