Lying on the bamboo beds in our homestay, we can hear the distant cries of the four-month-old baby and the loud screams of the three-year-old brother filling the room. To the right of us, the heavy balcony door leads to an incredible view of the zigzagging, busy streets of Varanasi. Tuk-tuk carts, motorcycles, trucks and cars honk and beep at the same time, rushing in all directions right at each other all hoping to get by swiftly and safely. Cows and goats and dogs wander carelessly through the chaos, adding their moos, bhaas, barks once in a while to the hectic high and low noises. Dark green and gold streetlights and neon shop signs illuminate the entire neighborhood. The 110 degree heat flows with the thick smells of pollution…this is Varanasi at a glance, through our homestay room window.
