My name is Sylvie Weiman, and I live in Alexandria, VA which is right near Washington D.C. I just finished my junior year of high school and am so excited for this summer!
In my free time I love reading, hiking, going to concerts, and playing casual games of soccer with my friends. I’ve taken French for 8 years but just started learning Spanish a few years ago, so I look forward to practicing in Peru. Besides getting more comfortable with Spanish on this course, I am looking forward to the physical and mental challenge that the trekking will bring.
For the pre-course assignments, I watched Hija de la Laguna. What struck me most was the different ways in which people view and use natural resources. Gold is an important means for some people to make a living, but it can destroy the natural environment that others call home. I also read the article How the Potato Changed the World. It was cool to learn more about the history of a food that is so commonly eaten and enjoyed.
I am so excited for our adventures to come and can’t wait to meet you all!
