Ready, Set…. (A Note from a Past Dragons Student)

Future Dragons,

I hope you’re getting excited for the enlightening adventure that awaits you! I can tell you from experience that there is nothing quite like the feeling of being on a Dragons trip. From filling out the application and beginning to pack to returning home and fulfilling the path that has awaited you, being a Dragon is truly a special gift.

You may have a million questions and emotions regarding your trip, which is completely normal. Who wouldn’t be a bit nervous to leave home for a summer? Dragons provides a great support network for you to reach out to with questions ranging from how many pairs of pants should I bring? to how can I be sure that this trip is right for me? You can inquire with your instructors via phone, with your group via yak, with the Boulder office via phone or email, or with alumni like myself via email (you can find an alumni reference list in your Course Preparation Manual).

Aside from getting those questions answered, it’s time to start getting excited about your trip! Let your friends know you’re leaving; plan your own goodbye party, make an Insta post saying a temporary goodbye to the things you love about your home or sharing your preparations (and hashtag it with #wheretherebedragons). Take a look at other students who are doing the same and be proud of your bravery and independence.

Eat all of your favorite foods before you go, because that’s a tough goodbye too. And don’t forget to take a moment and remember the life that you’re leaving behind. Envision the life that you want to come home to and the person that you’d like to come home as. Think productively: what can I do to make this summer the best of my life?

Lastly, welcome to the Dragons community and to a greater global community as well. As a Dragon, I have gained more global contacts and companions than I ever thought I would. Personally, I do think my trips helped me become much more human. I am so very jealous of you all and am sending great thoughts your way. If you have any questions for a fellow Dragon, I’d be happy to lend an answer.

Happy adventuring,Emma Bailey
