Hello everybody !
My name is Cheney (pronounced Chay-Knee) and I am extremely excited to meet you all!
I am currently in a hammock watching my dogs soak in the sun on this 100º hot, humid summer’s day in Houston, Texas. As I prepare for my departure, I keep wondering about the factors that led me to this new adventure. Instantly, I think of two main events that sparked my desire and hunger to learn more about this world and myself.
My parents immigrated to America from Mexico, fell in love, and had three beautiful daughters. I am the youngest of my siblings, and we are all Hispanic, first-generation high school graduates and college students. I just graduated high school a few days ago!!! My parents always encouraged my siblings and me to live a choice-filled life. It is because of my parent’s decision to enter this country and pursue a better life that I am continuously inspired to uncover the limits to my ambitions and the world’s complex yet beautiful layers.
So, in my junior year, I attended a semester school called High Mountain Institute in Leadville, Colorado. This program is similar to WTBD because they teach you how to live simple yet rich lives– leaving the unnecessary stuff like phones at home! Here is where I fell in love with the outdoors, reinforced my identity as a proud Hispanic woman, and realized I had a passion for community and human connection. It was at HMI that my mentor/teacher/friend told me about WTBD. Her face brightened with a smile as she shared her experience as an instructor, and I immediately knew I had to apply.
So here I am 🙂 I thank my lucky stars I’m able to venture and explore a different crevice of this world with you all!
A few things about me…
“What does sustainability mean to you?”
For me, living sustainably means living intentionally. Not only is the goal to reduce your carbon footprint, but it’s also to create a balance between what you take away from your natural resources and what you can give back to nature.
Thanks for reading! I look forward to meeting you all soon!
