What is development?

What is development? We asked the students to ponder this very question.  As we drove around the ancient city in our tuk tuks,  And as we walked along the ghats, and as we floated in the Ganga, and as we explored Banaras University, this was the question on our minds.

Is it moving towards what the Western culture has decided is developed? Is it having a cell phone to take pictures of the tourists in your country? Is it having an education at the University? How do we maintain what is important to our culture while still making progress? And what is progress? Is it picketing for climate change? Is it smart phones?

We have a lot more thinking to do….
