The Murals of San Juan La Laguna

On the afternoon we arrived in San Juan La Laguna we had the pleasure of viewing the murals of the city in the company of Diego Ixtamer who is one of the muralists who created them. As he explained to the group, these murals are one of the ways that the community can stay in touch with their history and traditional culture. The paintings are saturated with symbolism based on Tz’utujil mythology as well as representing local community members. While we could only look at a few of the many murals around the city it has made me wonder about the stories behind all of the beautiful art that I walk past every day all over this town.
