Greetings from Ling

Da Jia Hao,

This is Ling from China, and I will be accompanying you for 2019-2020 Bridge Year, I can’t wait to meet all of you!

I was born and raised in Chengdu, a major city in the southwest of China. I’m an only child, 玲(Ling) is my Chinese given name, representing my parents beautiful hope in me. At the age of 5, I began to learn about drawing and it is still one of my favorite hobbies.

I believe in the old Chinese saying:” 读万卷书行万里路 ( Du Wan Juan Shu, Xing Wan Li Lu).”  Which literally means: “read ten thousand scrolls; walk ten thousand miles,” emphasising that study and travel are both very important to gain wisdom.

I can’t describe how much I’ve learned about this world and myself from my travel. There have been many moments that have changed my mindset completely and have become milestones in my life. Those experiences helped shaped my character, taught me a new personal philosophy on life, wherein I gained an in-depth understanding of cultural and individual differences. Sometimes I feel panicked about how much in this world waiting us to discover and learn, but one step after another, I also believe that my infinite desire to learn and share knowledge will lead me to meet the greater good.

China is my motherland, and, to be fair, it is one of the most amazing and complex places I’ve traveled through: the rich history, the incredible landscapes, and the colourful ethnic cultures. I can easily list dozens of reasons why I find my country fascinating, but we also have discussions and thoughts against the rapid economy development, the loss of tradition, values of society, environmental crises etc. Those are infinite topics for all of us to explore, and I think that dynamic and conflicting set of realities make China one of the most perplexing and incredible educational destinations.

I am excitedly looking forward to the coming 9 months with all of you. Please come with an open mind, passion, curiosity and patience.  You will catch a glimpse of this massive land that used to be known as the Dragons’ Empire, you will share many unforgettable moments with your peers and people here, and I hope this program will be one of the milestones in your life.

See you soon!
