My name is Svetlana Johnson and I am super excited to be going on this amazing journey with all of you. My family is originally from the West Indies, but we moved to the US when I was four, so I’ve spent most of my life in South Florida. Growing up, my parents tried really hard to make sure that my brothers and I maintained a strong connection and appreciation for our culture and where we came from and, because South Florida has such a strong mix of communities, I’ve made many friends with a similar experience. That being said I am very interested in the similarities and differences that cross cultural lines all over the world and how they form who we are and how we understand each other. My biggest goal for going on this trip is to learn something new about the world, about people, about language, about culture, and about myself. I hope that this year will help me to grow as a person and challenge myself to be more open to new opportunities and experiences.
I spend most of my free time with my family, specifically my brothers. I enjoy reading, writing, and music. I play the piano (though I’m out of practice) and the clarinet, although I have decided to leave my clarinet behind due to lack of space. I look forward to meeting all my fellow bridge year participants and getting to know you!
